Kaily May's Artist Statment

For the work I have created I wanted to play with the saying "Beauty is only skin deep". Throughout this body of work I'm trying to express my side of the argument on woman's beauty. Often times other people will prejudge a woman by the way she looks on the surface. I wanted to try to apply my opinions and thoughts to my thrown objects by surface work, general form, textures and colors. All of my objects, as a form, represent a woman. I feel I have accomplished this by the curves and the inward and outward angels I formed on each individual vessel. Also, I wanted to bring a natural element, the leaves, to the surface work on my forms to represent the natural beauty of all women. I then decided to use other colors and apply them with sponges to indicate a woman putting makeup on. I choose used light yellows, peaches, bright pinks, deep reds, charcoal greys and golden browns because those are mainly tones in my makeup bag. I used stencils, air brushing and carving techniques to represent hiding and relieving women's true percipience and the image they want to show to the public. I hope that when people see my work they will look at it and see feminine beauty, when they touch it it feels smooth and well crafted, and when they use it it works well and fits its purpose.
